Meet the 2012 ADDY Judges

DAVE NEWBOLD

President / Executive Creative Director – Richter7, Salt Lake City

Heralded by ADWEEK magazine as “a creative star” in the Intermountain West’s ad industry, and as a “stellar creative talent” by One magazine, Dave Newbold has earned local, regional and national recognition for creativity from the CLIOs, EMMYs, ADDYs and OBIEs, plus multiple honors from The One Show, Communication Arts, Archive Magazine, Mobius Awards and the New York International Advertising Festivals. He was named 2008 Advertising Professional of the Year by the American Advertising Federation – Utah Chapter. In addition, he has earned over 475 Utah ADDY awards and received AAF-Utah Creative Director of the Year honors.

Dave fervently believes awards are merely a bonus for doing the job right in the first place – that being, to sell a client’s product or services. His creative approach incorporates thorough research, a philosophy that has taken him to the fields of Major League ballparks and the back shelves of historical libraries to explore the nuances of his subjects. Dave’s talent has benefited such entities as American Express, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Major League Baseball, Mrs. Fields, Hogle Zoo, 7UP, Park City, Boy Scouts of America, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Foot Locker, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, among others.

Dave is a past president and board member of the American Advertising Federation – Utah Chapter.  When he’s not managing the affairs of Richter7, he and his wife try to manage four, headstrong daughters and a son (which is similar in scope to keeping a 40-person ad agency under control).

DOUG PEDERSEN

Freelance Art Director/Creative Director

Doug is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin. Though he loved Texas, he hated the heat and left in search of cooler climates.

Thus he spent 9 years in Charlotte, NC at the highly awarded Loeffler Ketchum Mountjoy. Then it was on to stints at Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami and Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis. Currently he works as a freelance art director/creative director.

Over the course of his 12+ years in advertising he has had the fortune to produce advertising campaigns for Volkswagen, Harley-Davidson, Subaru, Outward Bound, Schutt Sports, Redfeather Snowshoes, Burger King, Miller Lite, North Carolina Tourism and a long list of others.

Though advertising keeps him pretty busy Doug still finds time to take in more than his fair share of movies and music and whenever possible dabbles in creating his own art and illustrations.

In addition to his design studies, he played basketball at UW as an undergraduate, and professionally worldwide for seven years, while pursuing a parallel career as a freelance designer.

In 2003, Woods returned to the University of Washington as a graduate student, teaming up with the UW Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GOMAP) and the Visual Communication department to develop the Inneract Project, a program to teach middle school inner-city youth and the community about the power of design (inneractproject.org). The Inneract Project currently has programs in both the East Bay and San Francisco. Woods has given lectures nationally and internationally, has served as co-chair of education for the AIGA San Francisco and nationally as a board of advisor member for the Diversity Archive and Exhibition.

NANCY STRANGE

Copywriter

After earning an MA in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000, Nancy Strange promptly spent the next several years not getting her first agency job. She spent a lot of that time in Richmond, Virginia where she co-taught writing-intensive classes and led a major rebranding effort while working as the Communications Director at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts.

In 2007, she finally buckled down, moved to New York, and became an honest-to-goodness Copywriter. At Atmosphere BBDO and JWT she worked on such clients as AT&T, Citibank, Simple Shoes, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Stouffer’s and Diamond Trading Company. Then, in 2011, she moved to San Francisco for the daily opportunity to curse the weather and love her job at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. She’s constantly hungry while creating work for amazing clients like Sonic Drive-In, Dreyer’s and Häagen-Dazs.

Her work has been recognized by One Show Interactive, Cannes International Advertising Festival, The Webby Awards and Communication Arts Advertising Annual.

Nancy has, over the years, really grown into her last name.
